Cataracts

A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye. The lens is located behind the pupil and is responsible for focusing images onto the retina. When the lens becomes clouded, it is called a “cataract.” Cataracts cause vision to be blurry or hazy, and often there is a glare from bright lights at night or the sun during the day. Cataracts can also cause colors to seem faded and difficulty seeing well in low light conditions and at night.

Cataracts are a natural result of the aging process and are common in people over the age of 60 but can occur at any age. Eye injuries can sometimes cause cataracts, and some illnesses such as diabetes can be associated with cataracts. Occasionally, cataracts are present at birth.

Cataracts can only be removed with surgery. Surgery is not always necessary. Eyeglasses sometimes help in the early stages of cataract development.

Usually the decision to remove a cataract is based on the symptoms; once a person can no longer see well enough to do routine activities.
